従来, 近代以前の日本語表記は, 明示的な規範によらない, 無秩序で不合理なものと考えられてきた。しかし, それはこれまでの分析装置が不備であったため, その原理を明らかにできなかっただけであり, 当時も文書・文献によって正確な伝達が可能だった以上, そこには合理的で精緻なルールが働いていたのである。今年度は, 前近代の日本語の表記機構のうち, 仮名表記と送り仮名についての分析をおこなった。仮名表記については, 従来, 一つのことばに対して唯一の表記が対応する「唯一性表記」ばかりが正確な伝達を可能にする健全な表記機構と考えられてきたが, 一つのことばに対して複数の表記が対応する「多表記性表記」も, 表記からことばへの一意的な復元が可能な健全な表記機構であるということをすでに以前, 江戸時代の仮名表記について明らかにしており, 現在この見解は学界で広く認められつつある。今回は, この種の仮名表記がひらがな・カタカナ成立後, ことばと表記の唯一性の対応を大きく崩した音韻変化の結果生じた, 平安末期にまでさかのぼるものであることを実証した。従来, 音韻変化後には, 「かなづかい」が唯一性の表記を維持するために提唱され, 仮名表記の規範として広く行われたものと考えられてきたが, 「かなづかい」はむしろ傍流であり, この「多表記性表記」こそが, 実はその後長く仮名表記の主流をなしてきたという見通しも得られている。送り仮名については, 現代につながる「送り仮名法」の規範がはじめて提唱された明治9年以前の, 前近代以来の状況を代表するものとして福沢諭吉の『学問ノスゝメ』とその周辺の文献をとりあげ, その送り仮名の原則を帰納した。現行の「送り仮名の付け方」をはじめ, 近代に提唱された送り仮名法が漢字の担当する部分を一定にしようとする原則によるものであるのに対し, 当時の送り仮名は, 送り仮名の部分の方を一定にしようとするまったく別の原理によるものであり, これは日本語をはじめから漢字交じりで書き下ろすためというより, 漢文に送り仮名を付す際の便宜から生じたものであることを明らかにした。 In this year's research, I clarified that rational principles work on two notational mechanisms of Japanese before modern times : Kana spelling and switching Kanji into Kana (Okurigana), which were conventionally regarded as irrational and disorderly.
