Is-landscapes' of history in the South Pacific : a combined view of historical ecology with historical anthropology

オセアニア考古学では, 南太平洋に散らばる島々は人類の移動や拡散ルートの「中継地」として語られることが多い。しかし, 個々の島々に焦点をあてれば, 海を渡る人々はさまざまなモノを運び, 持ち込んだ道具とアイデアで土地をいじくり, 土着の動植物を消費し, 往々にして死滅させる存在である。こうした人間の営為が歴史の中で凝集しながら, 島景観を変化させてきたと考えれば, 自然の営力と人間の営為の絡み合いの歴史的産物として現景観を位置づける歴史生態学的研究の進展にも考古学, 特にジオ・アーケオロジーは大いに貢献できるはずである。2017年度は, オセアニアにおけるジオ・アーケオロジー研究をレビューするとともに, 浅層ボーリング調査と低地発掘調査を自ら実施した八重山諸島石垣島名蔵地区を対象に, 元素分析, 花粉分析, プラント・オパール分析, 微粒炭分析の結果を時間軸にそって束ね, 完新世中期以降の島景観史をまとめた。興味深いことに, 約5000年前から台地の上で火災が起き, 照葉樹林が後退してパイオニア植生の落葉樹が増えてきたことが分かった。おそらくは人為的な火入れによる植生変化と考えられる。また, それに合わせて台地上から谷戸内に土砂が流れ込み, 排水の悪い氾濫原湿地が水田に適した沖積低地へと次第に変化したことが明らかとなった。台地の上で生じた「火入れ→植生変化→土壌流出」は人間が引き起こした環境破壊のように聞こえるが, 谷戸の中では崩積土によって沖積低地が形成され, 外からもたらされたイネとともに水田という新しい景観を生み出すきっかけとなったことになる。すなわち, 島景観の変化を破壊と向上の二者択一で評価することは難しい。それよりもむしろ, 島景観は人が住む限りアドホックに変化し続けていくものとして, その生成変化の可能性を閉じないことこそ重要である。
Oceanic archaeologists have tended to think islands in the South Pacific as stepping stones for immigrants to colonize towards east. For each island, however, the immigrants have been agents or an agency to bring various materials including plants and animals, to consume the native biota, and sometimes to extirpate some species. Archaeological research, in particular geo-archaeological one, should contribute to the advance of historical ecology which studies the present landscape as historical products of entanglement and contestation between two agencies, human and nature. In 2017 academic year, I synthesized the landscape history in the late Holocene of Ishigaki Island in Yaeyama Islands (the southwestern part of Japan), by compiling, along the same time scale, several environmental proxies obtained from core samples of my own shallow-boring surveys, such as results of chemical, pollen, plant opal, and micro charcoal analyses, while I reviewed geoarchaeological studies of Oceanic archaeology as well. What is the most intriguing is that the human-induced fire has probably happened on hills of Ishigaki since ca. 5000yrs, and the deciduous forest of pioneer plants gradually expanded as well as the evergreen broad forest decreased. In this process of vegetation change, the eroded hill soil also transformed the adjoining valley in flood plain into an alluvial lowland which would be suitable for irrigation of rice cultivation. While the deforestation of evergreen broad trees appears a case of environmental degradation, eroded colluvial soil accumulated has made a new anthropogenic landscape of irrigated fields of rice which was transported from the outside, probably from the Okinawa Island, around the late 15th AD. Therefore, it is not easy to alternatively evaluate such a change as degradation or enhancement. Rather, it should be more important for us not to vanish the possibility of transformational changes of 'is-landscape'.
