The aim of the course was to explore the cultural/social/scientific/historical/literary/personal meanings of bodies as a medium. In what way bodies can be used for what purposes? The invited lecturers approached the question from various perspectives, giving the audience multi-faceted viewpoints. A book project is underway. Following is the list of the invited lecturers: Spring term 1) Hiroshi Imai (Wacoal Human Science Research Center) on "aging and bodies." 2) Kyoko Nakamura (Kyoto University) on "Kenyan beadworks and their social meanings." 3) Yukari Kato (Faculty of Letters, American Literature) on mythical creatures "Kappas." 4) Motoki Kimura (Nihon Sumo Kyokai, sumo referee) on sumo and referee's works in sumo business. 5) Ru Hairong (Actor of Kunqu Opera) on Chinese Kunqu opera. 6) Hideaki Kawabata (Faculty of Letters, Psychology) on the "mind-body relationship." 7) Mei Usui (Playwright) on "bodies on stage." 8) Kohei Hayashi (Poet, Keisen University) on "Hijikata Tatsumi and his poetics of dance." 9) Yukako Yoshida (Tokyo University of Foreign Studies) on "Balinese masque plays." 10) Tatsuya Kashiwabata (Faculty of Letters, Philosophy) on "Knowledge, Actions, Controls." Fall term 1) Mario Kumekawa (Faculty of Letters, German Literature) on Goethe as a scientist. 2) Masayuki Okahara (Faculty of Letters, Sociology) on knowledge acquired through bodies. 3) Kenji Kamiyama (A.J.U Center for Independent Living) on bodies, media, and impediments. 4) Hitoshi Nagasawa (Graphic designer and fashion historian) on fashion modes and sexual/political bodies 5) Eiko Sasaki (Japanese Society for Theatre Research) on using theatrical interactive methods in the classroom. 6) Emi Goto (University of Tokyo) on "(non-)veiled Islamic women." 7) Motoko Sugino (Faculty of Letters, Chinese Literature) on Kawakami Yoshiko and her trans-national bodies. 8) Joe Koizumi (Ring Japan Co.) on the "mind-body-art" in sports. 9) Yuko Chigira (theatrical company Swanny) on playwriting and theatrical bodies on stage 10) Eiichiro Hirata (Faculty of Letters, German Literature, drama studies) on theaters and the audience. 11) Atsushi Ohmura (University of Tokyo) on law and the human body.
