世界的な高齢化の進行を背景に、ニューロリハビリテーションによる身体機能の回復に大きな期待が寄せられている。研究代表者は科研費若手研究（Ａ）により力触覚代替と動作代行を実現可能な義手を開発することに成功し、任意の身体部位の動きと任意の身体部位の知覚とを対応付けることを可能にした。本国外留学では、上記研究成果をニューロリハビリテーションの領域へと展開し、義手による四肢欠損者の作業支援のみならず、麻痺患者の身体機能自体の回復を狙うものであった。目的達成のため、本分野の第一人者である米国マサチューセッツ工科大学のHermano Igo Krebs博士のもとに滞在し、人間動作の原理解明と、ニューロリハビリテーションに有効な新たなセンサの開発に取り組んだ。人間動作の原理解明については、力入力タスクにおける人間の応答を離散的動作、周期的動作、目標値遷移動作の観点から解析し、その特性を明らかにした（"Characteristics of Human Behavior in Force Modulation while Performing Force Tracking Tasks," 2020 8th IEEE RAS/EMBS International Conference for Biomedical Robotics and Biomechatronics）。力センサの開発に関しては、入射光量によって出力電流が変化するフォトトランジスタに着目し、距離・傾き・接触力を測定可能なセンサの開発に成功した（距離・傾き・接触力を測定可能な光学センサによる接触前可変インピーダンス制御、電気学会産業応用部門産業計測制御研究会）。本成果により、電気学会優秀論文発表賞Ａおよび電気学会優秀論文発表賞（電気学会応用部門産業計測制御技術委員会）を受賞した。また、本センサを活用し、ロボットに接近する物体の知覚手法を国際会議IIAEにおいて提案し、Best Paper Awardを受賞した（Perception of Approaching Objects in Bilateral Control Using Proximity Sensor, The 9th IIAE International Conference on Industrial Application Engineering 2021）。さらに、上記センサにおいては対象物の反射率の影響を受けることが欠点であったが、この欠点を光位置センサによって解決し、新たなセンサの開発と撃力低減手法の提案を行った。本成果については本分野トップレベルの国際学術論文誌に採択されるに至った（Takahiro Nozaki and Hermano Igo Krebs, "Development of an Optical Sensor Capable of Measuring Distance, Tilt, and Contact Force," IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, Accepted for Publication [IF: 7.515]）。
