19世紀から20世紀初頭にかけてのフランスで、リアリズム小説は社会の現実と歴史の諸相をさまざまな技法とテーマによって描き出した。本研究では、個別の作家や作品を出発点にしながら、そこに通底する特徴を明らかにしようとした。具体的には次のような点である。１）19世紀のリアリズム小説は、それ以前の文学にほとんど登場しなかった新たな人物像を創り出した。たとえば地方から野心に燃えて首都パリにやって来る青年や、社会に認められずに葛藤する芸術家である。前者はさまざまな媒介者を通じて社会と世界の構造を学ぶことで、ひとりの人間として成長していく。そこから「教養小説」の図式が生まれる。他方芸術家は、みずからの理想と社会の現実との対立に直面し、ときには挫折する。その葛藤を通じて作家は社会の裏面をあばき出そうとする。両者に共通するのは、フランス・リアリズム小説において首都パリと地方の対立が、物語のダイナミズムに貢献していることである。この点は、『世界文学へのいざない』に収めたバルザックとゾラに関する論考で展開した。２）同時代の習俗と感性を浮き彫りにするのも、リアリズム文学の特徴である。バルザックが『人間喜劇』の「総序」において主張したように、作家は習俗の歴史家であろうとした。しばしば同時代の事件から題材を採り、それを作中人物の私生活に落とし込むことで、読者との間に親密な感情空間を構築することが分かった。この点は『感情の歴史Ⅱ』（翻訳）の「訳者あとがき」で発展させた。３）リアリズム小説は、同時代の多様な知の言説と共振することが確認できた。たとえば、ミシュレなど歴史家の著作がもたらす歴史学の知、身体と病理に関する医学や生理学の言説である。それら異なる領域の知が、リアリズム文学に社会的位相の広がりを付与していることが分かった。cf.「文学に現れる感染症」、「歴史と文学」。 From the 19th century until the beginning of the 20th century, the French realist novel represents social realities and various aspects of history, using new techniques and original themes. I have tried to show the characteristics of realism that contribute to the intelligibility of modern society. 1) Realistic writers stage new characters such as the ambitious young man who has moved to Paris or the artist faced with a prosaic world. The heroes' tragic conflict with the world is one of the main themes of realist literature. 2) The realistic novel is intended to be an expression of contemporary mores as well as of private life, as Balzac well illustrates. 3) Realism resonates with scientific discourses such as medicine and physiology to broaden the cultural scope of literature.
