本研究では、気道炎症におけるM細胞の意義について検証した。遺伝子欠損マウスを用いた解析により、M細胞はNALTおよびiBALTの形成には関与しないことが明らかとなった。一方、免疫誘導機能には軽微な減弱が認められた。またこの遺伝子欠損マウスは、野生型マウスに比べ、HDM誘導性の気管支炎に対して感受性がやや増加した。この結果は、気道M細胞は気道炎症に対して防御的に働くことを推測させた。 Our results from M cell-null Spi-B or Sox8-deficient mice indicate that the development of airway mucosa-associated lymphoid tissues, like NALT and iBALT, is independent of M cells. On the other hand, the defect of Spi-B slightly reduced germinal center B cells, indicating the reduced induction of immune responses. The Spi-B depletion exacerbated the house dust mite (HDM)-induced asthma, as represented by the increased number of macrophages infiltrating the bronchoalveolar lumen. This result suggests that M cells play an important role in the defense against airway damage.
