本稿は19–20世紀転換期における在来産業の生産規模拡大と製品ポートフォリオ拡張の関連性解明を課題とし，上花輪歴史館所蔵髙梨本家文書より醬油醸造家・髙梨兵左衛門家（千葉県野田町）の地方売りを分析した。本稿の分析より3点が明らかになった。第1に，低級品醬油が主体の地方市場は異地点間の価格連動性が低かった。第2に，髙梨家は低級品の販売拡大を手印と手印類似品の提供拡大によって達成した。第3に，地方市場で手印と手印類似品は販路確保のみならず価格の低下抑制に寄与した。在来産業はテクノロジー・フロンティアの押し上げが不可能な特性から製品ポートフォリオの水平的拡張に傾注したが，在来産業で製品の品質規格は近代産業より統一されていなかった。その状況下で各生産主体は個別に大量の印を設定し，多様な印は在来産業の製品市場で各製品の識別に用いられた。こうした特徴から在来産業は近代産業より製品ポートフォリオの水平的拡張を柔軟に実施し，価格の部分的なコントロールに利用した。以上を近代産業とは異なる在来産業固有の製品ポートフォリオの拡張として理解できよう。
