The purpose of this essay is to address the issues concerning transnational migration through the human security lens. My particular concern is the fact that the transnational migration of labour in Thailand is induced by the problems of human insecurity in the sending countries and results in a widening and deepening scope of human insecurity in both sending and receiving countries.While focusing on the case of Thailand, this essay argues that the problems emanating from the transnational labor migration is not resulting from some irrational response as such on the part of the Thai government, but the lack of proper knowledge in the policy making process. As a result, a narrow perspective of national security on migration-related issues often leads to policies which often threaten to worsen human security of the people involved. This essay also calls attention to the more recent initiatives to place the flow of migrant labours on a more organized basis involving both government and non-government actors. This essay, given the limited data available as of this writing, is not meant to be a comprehensive survey of the issues concerning transnational migration. It is, rather, meant to raise the old issue of migrant labours in the new light of human security.
