• Note (General): type:text; 本研究は三年間にわたるプロジェクトである。初年にあたる本年度は、以下のふたつの研究発表をふたつの国際学会で英語で行った（詳細は３を参照）。（１）「後期スタイル再考 ヴァージニア・ウルフの『波』」と（２）「ヴァージニア・ウルフと映画的現在」である。 以下、その要旨を記す。 （１）本発表の目的は、「レイト（後期）モダニズム」をヴァージニア・ウルフの作品の文脈から再考する点にある。これまで、『波』は「ハイ（盛期）モダニズム」を代表する作品として扱われてきた。私はそうした想定をモダニズムの衝動に内在する「遅延」の観点から捉え直すことの重要性を主張した。本年度は、1930年代から第二次世界大戦にかけてのいわゆる「後期のウルフ」に焦点を合わせた研究を行ってきた。エドワード・サイードの「晩年のスタイル」を導きの糸として、ここで私はウルフの「晩年のスタイル」が、批評的なコンセンサスとなっている時期よりもはるかに早く訪れていた可能性を指摘し、「レイト・モダニズム」や「ハイ・モダニズム」といった批評的な用語が、ある文学者の文学的な営為を捉えるには不十分な批評格子であることをつまびらかにしようと試みた。 （２）本発表の目的は、ヴァージニア・ウルフの文学作品を静止と運動のあいだの映画的矛盾を描き出したテクストとして提示する点にある。モダニズムと映画はこれまでに研究が進められてきた領域であるが、このふたつの異なるメディアの間のテクスト分析はまだ十分に行われていないように思われる。私の発表の目的は、イギリスのモダニズムの文脈において、こうした歴史的一致を提示することにある。具体的には、ウルフの『ダロウェイ夫人』をグリフィスの映画『イントラランス』と比較し、両者のテクストの運動を「永遠の現在」の到来という観点から分析した。 これらのふたつの発表は、ヴァージニア・ウルフの美学と政治学をめぐる私の三年間の発表の理論的な基礎を提供してくれると信じている。 My study is intended to be a three-year project. For the first year, I have presented two papers on the topics relevant to my project: (1) "Late Style Revisited: Virginia Woolf's The Waves" and (2) "Virginia Woolf and the Cinematic Present". Here is the summary of these two papers: (1) The main purpose of the first presentation is to reconfigure "late modernism" in the context of Virginia Woolf's works. There has been a critical consensus that The Waves is a literary text that represents "high modernism". However, I argue that such an assumption has to be reconsidered in terms of the "lateness" of modernist impulse. My research focus was on "late Woolf", the last stage of her literary career. Taking a cue from Edward Said's concept of "late style", I have suggested that Woolf's "late style" started much earlier than imagined in the critical arena, and that critical terms such as "late modernism" and "high modernism" can be more deceiving than revealing. (2) The main purpose of the second presentation is to suggest that Woolf's literary text performs the cinematic conflict between stillness and motion. Modernism and cinema has been an area of research that has been extensively explored. However, the textual analysis of the two media has not been sufficiently conducted, and my contribution is to present a historical coincidence in the context of English modernism. I have attempted to analyze the textual movement of modernism by comparing Woolf's The Waves with Griffith's Intolerance. I believe that the two presentations will produce a theoretical foundation for my project.
