本研究の目的は、筋電気刺激（Electrical Muscle Stimulation: EMS）を用いた超絶技巧のリズム運動学習システムの開発と効果検証を行うことであった。具体的な課題として、両手で1 分間に1208 回ドラムを叩く（1 秒間に片手で10 回叩く）というドラム早叩きの世界ギネス記録を超えることを目標に掲げ、ドラム早叩きスキルの学習を促すEMSシステムの開発を行った。研究の結果、以下(1)～(5)の研究成果を得た。(1) シカゴ大学のPedro Lopes 博士との共同研究により、ドラム早叩きトレーニング専用の EMS システムを開発した。開発システムを用いて、片手10Hz 打撃という世界最速ドラマー級の超高速ドラミング運動をEMSで実現できることを確認した。(2) 開発したEMSシステムを用いて、短期ドラムトレーニング実験を行い、EMS なしの通常トレーニングに比べ、EMS ありのフィードバックトレーニングで高い学習効果が得られる可能性を示し、Rhythm Perception Production Workshop（RPPW）、及び北米音楽知覚認知学会（SMPC）にて発表した（Anzai et al., 2019ab）。(3) 開発したEMS システムがリズムトレーニング一般に有用か検証するために、EMS フィードバックがヒトの時間知覚や時間生成に与える影響についても検証し、得られた成果をRPPW、SMPC、及び、北米神経科学会（NEUROSCIENCE 2019）にて発表した（Konno et al., 2019abc）。（4) プロのパーカッション奏者（ダラブッカ奏者）の最速指タッピング運動能力について調査し、プロ奏者がアマチュア奏者に比べて指の協調性が優れていることを明らかにし、得られた成果をSMPCにて発表した（Honda et al., 2019）。(5) オランダ・ライデン大学の Lorentz Center にて開催されたリズム研究国際ワークショップ「Synchrony and Rhythmic Interaction: From Neurons to Ecology」にて、本研究の全体構想や得られた研究成果について発表した（Fujii, 2009） The purpose of this research was to develop an electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) system for learning rapid rhythmic movements. As a model of rapid rhythmic movements, we focused on a rapid drumming performance by the winner of a contest to find the world's fastest drummer (WFD). Specifically, the WFD achieved the record of 1,208 beats per minute with bimanual drumming movements. This speed equals to 10 beats per second for each hand (i.e., 10-Hz rhythmic movement). Thus, we aimed to develop an EMS feedback system to achieve the 10 Hz rapid rhythmic movement. We got the following achievements during the 2019 year: (1) In collaboration with Dr. Pedro Lopes (Chicago University), we developed an EMS system that enabled the training of rapid rhythmic movements. We confirmed that the EMS system enabled the 10-Hz rapid drumming movements, which was comparable to the world's fastest performance. (2) We performed an exploratory study to test the effect of short-term drum training. As a result, we found that the learning effect of the EMS feedback training might be better than the conventional drum training without EMS. This study was presented at the 17th Rhythm Perception and Production Workshop (RPPW) and the 2019 biennial meeting of the Society for Music Perception and Cognition (SMPC) (Anzai et al., 2019ab). (3) We aimed to test if the developed EMS feedback system was useful for more general rhythmic training. For this aim, we tested the effect of EMS feedback in time perception and production tasks. The results were presented at the RPPW, the SMPC, and the NEUROSCIENCE 2019 (Konno et al., 2019abc). (4) We investigated the rapid finger tapping performances of professional percussionists (darbuka players) and compared to the performances of control novice players. We found that the professional players showed faster tapping performances during multi-finger coordination but not during single-finger tapping condition. The finding was presented at the SMPC (Honda et al., 2019). (5) The overall aim of this project and results were presented at Lorentz Center Workshop, Synchrony and Rhythmic Interaction: From Neurons to Ecology in Leiden, Netherlands (Fujii, 2019).
