• Note (General): type:text; 本研究は、昭和18（1943）年3月10日の陸軍記念日を期して展開された運動の初動に注目し考察したものである。この運動に先立ち、日本政府は、ガダルカナルから撤退したことを婉曲な表現ながら公にしていたが、国内の軍への不信や厭戦気運の昂揚を回避するため、「鬼畜米英」に象徴されるような米英の残虐性を殊更強調するプロパガンダを先鋭化させるが、この運動はその一環であった。 同運動は、記念日2週間前の2月24日、運動の標語として「撃ちてし止まむ」に決定したことが公表され、かかる文言の下に記念日に向けメディアを中心に、音楽、演劇、映画、詩歌、絵画、写真などを巻き込む運動が全国的に展開された。また、標語の出典が、日本書記や古事記の中の神武天皇の御製であることが紹介され、日本兵士が星条旗とユニオンジャックを踏みつけながら突進する姿を描いたポスターが作成され、新聞各紙に大きな見出しと解説が加えられ紹介されたことを明らかにした。 また、「撃ちてし止まむ」の運動に際しては、新聞各紙が関連企画を展開することになるが、本研究では、当該標語を冠した『読売』の連載に注目し、「鬼畜米英」に象徴されるような人種偏見に満ちた文言が見出しや論考に表出していることを確認した。とりわけ、米英の残虐性が、戦争という非常時に限らず、長い歴史の中で、あるいは日常生活の中で見られることが強調されていた。 さらに、『読売』は、有名な漫画家横山隆一を起用し、銀座の百貨店の屋上の大きな看板に桃太郎の前に鬼に扮した米英がひれ伏す漫画を描かせていた。横山は、これ以外にも自らのキャラクターフクちゃんが米英の鬼を蹴り上げる漫画を描いていたが、それは、子供向け週刊誌の表紙を飾り、街頭の壁面にも描かれ屋外でのプロパガンダにも活用された。さらに、このように桃太郎の童話に準え、桃太郎が鬼に見立てた米英を退治する話は、戦時アニメでも活用されたが、その中に見出される人種偏見の濃淡についても考察を加えた。 This article examines the launch of the Uchiteshi Yamamu campaign on the occasion of the March 10, 1943 (Shōwa 18) Army Commemoration Day. Prior to the launch of the campaign the Japanese government ordered a withdrawal from Guadalcanal. The move became a statement signifying a broader shift in Japan's military strategy in the Pacific War – from offense to retreat. To avoid war-weariness, domestic distrust in the army and boost morale, the Japanese government initiated racial propaganda campaigns that demonized the allied forces such as the kichiku eibei slogan. Uchiteshi Yamamu was launched as a part of this new propaganda offensive. Uchiteshi Yamamu was declared the official slogan of the Army Commemoration Day on February 24, 1943, two weeks before the celebration. The phrase was drawn from the Nihon Shoki and the Kojiki referring to an imperial poem that Emperor Jinmu sung to lift his sprit during an eastern expedition that was met with obstacles. Japan's wartime struggle was likened to this mythical journey fraught with trials. Newspaper columns that introduced the Uchiteshi Yamamu slogan argued that the cruel nature of the Americans and British could be witnessed in their everyday lives and throughout history, not just during wartime. On the day of the campaign launch, newspapers depicted grandiose images of Japanese soldiers charging forward while trampling on the American and British flags. Aside from these images that the army commissioned artists to produce for newspapers and magazines, there was an explosion of posters and street art that showed popular manga characters such as Fuku-chan and Momotarō as symbols of Japan triumphant over the powerless American and British "devils." Uchiteshi Yamamu propaganda also cut across other cultural forms such as music, theatre, movies, poetry, art and photography, which I will explore in future research.
