• Note (General): type:text; 本研究は、17世紀後半から18世紀末を対象に、フィクション、ノンフィクションを問わず、近代英文学の諸作品における日本の表象を網羅的に示すとともに、その表象を個別的・具体的に考察することで、日本の表象が近代英文学の展開に与えた影響とその推移を明らかにすることを目的として2019年度に遂行された。その研究成果実績は、主に次の三点に集約される。一つは、原田が従来、科研費助成研究（基盤C、課題番号26370296）などで取り組んできた、ジョージ・サルマナザール、ダニエル・デフォー、ジョナサン・スウィフトなどの個別作品における日本表象の分析に加え、The Tatler、The Spectator、The Gentleman's Magazine、The London Magazine、The World、The Critical Review、Lady's Magazine、The Monthly Magazine、The Asiatic Annual Registerなど、当時の主要定期刊行物における日本への言及を網羅的に調査し、その結果、デフォーやスウィフトはもとより、サミュエル・ジョンソン、トバイアス、スモレット、オリヴァー・ゴールドスミスといった主に18世紀後半の文学者による日本表象が、こうした定期刊行物による情報提供に少なからず依拠していることを確認したこと、しかしながら第二に、いわゆる「鎖国」下における人的物的交流の衰退から、18世紀半ば以降の英語文献における日本表象は次第にその架空性を強め、他方、インドおよび中国を含む東南アジアに関する具体的描写が精緻化されていく状況を把握できたこと、そして第三に、そうした英語文献におけるアジア観の変容は、17世紀後半から18世紀初頭にかけてのアジア観、世界観に比べ、現実的な植民地経営や領土侵略に関わる課題を伴ってナショナリズムの様相を強めてくることを明らかにすることができたこと、である。末尾ながら、本研究に活用した18世紀イギリスの文献類の整備については、学事振興資金に負うところが大きかったことを特記したい。 The research supported by Keio Academic Development Funds (for Individual Research) in 2019 was designed for understanding the representations of Japan in the English books and periodicals published from late seventeenth century to the end of the eighteenth century and for clarifying the influence of those representations upon English literature at the time. The results I have obtained from the research are summarized in the following three contents. First of all, the research could cover not only major works in English literature but also the eighteenth-century English periodicals such as The Tatler, The Spectator, The Gentleman's Magazine, The London Magazine, The World, The Critical Review, Lady's Magazine, The Monthly Magazine, and The Asiatic Annual Register and prove that references to Japan by English literary authors in late eighteenth century like Samuel Johnson, Tobias Smollett, and Oliver Goldsmith (not only by those in early eighteenth century like George Psalmanazar, Daniel Defoe, and Jonathan Swift) were clearly based on the descriptions of Japan in those contemporary periodicals. Secondly, however, those references to Japan by late eighteenth-century literary authors boost the colour of literary imagination rather than realistic description because of the lack of substantial communication between England and Japan under the national closure by the Japanese government. By contrast, references to India, China, and other East-Asian countries increased in number and come to be more detailed. And thirdly, the English view of Asia in late eighteenth century gradually narrows its focus on the geographical and industrial facts of the countries and regions in which the British government was specifically interested for the territorial expansion. Different from the view of Asia in early eighteenth century that provided unique creativity for the literary authors in the rise of the English novel, the view of Asia in late eighteenth century took on an aspect of nationalism.
