本研究助成金を活用して、ロレンス研究、モダニズム文学研究、イギリス思想史研究、スピリチュアリティ研究など、さまざまな分野の研究に関する知識を深めることができたのが、まず何よりもありがたかった。Jeff Wallaceの優れた現代思想の観点から見たロレンス思想研究とDavid Hume研究と現代Yogaの歴史研究を相互に参照しながら勉強することによってしか得られない研究の視点が得られたと確信する。本プロジェクトに属する最初のD・H・ロレンス論として、日本英文学会の『関東英文學研究』に「Sons and Loversと「生」」と題する論文を投稿し、2021年1月号に掲載された。ロレンスの代表的な長篇小説の1つSons and Loversにさまざまな形で現れる「生」の形を考察するもので、この「生」が20世紀初頭のイギリスに特徴的なスピリチュアリティと不可分の関係にあることを主人公の主体性の問題ともからめて証明した。西洋近代における宗教性を論じる際の最重要書の1つであるCharles Taylor, A Secular Ageの研究会人を引きつづき毎月開催しており、日本英文学会の現会長をはじめ、我が国を代表する研究者と新進気鋭の学徒の双方を交えて、活発に議論をたたかわしている。本プロジェクトの副産物としては、19世紀後半の英国小説家サミュエル・バトラーのディストピア小説『エレホン』の翻訳と解説が挙げられる。ダーウィンの同時代人で、進化論の影響を受けながら新しい宗教性を探し求めたバトラーの代表作は、スイフト『ガリヴァー旅行記』の伝統を受け継ぐ傑作風刺小説で、20年7月の拙訳出版は大きな反響を呼び、全国紙にも大きく書評が掲載された。解説を書くにあたり、19世紀英国の信仰と懐疑と宗教性の問題への洞察を深めることができて、ロレンス文学のスピリチュアリティに関する歴史的な文脈の理解を深めることができた。 "Sons and Lovers and LIFE" was published in Kanto Studies in English Literature, in January 2021, which turned out to be the first publication of the present project. In it, I discussed the significances of LIFE in D.H.Lawrence's first major novel, which are inevitably linked to the questions of spirituality and subjectivity. My translation with an introduction of Samuel Butler's Erewhon was published in July, 2020. Samuel Butler, the man who explored the spiritual potential in the nineteenth-century Evolutionary theories, was certainly one of the important forerunners of D.H.lawrence in this context.
