• Note (General): type:text; 人にできて他の動物にできないこと、それは二つの要素を組み合わせる操作を繰り返すことで、階層関係 (例えば[John [admired Mary]], [太郎が [花子を褒めた]]) を生み出し、その階層関係に基づいて新しい表現を現すことである。それができるのは人間だけなのである。 この知見は、日本語を話し理解する際に働いている仕組みが、英語を話し理解する際にも働いていることを示している。言語活動において重要な役割を担う統辞構造の階層関係は、併合操作 (Merge(X,Y)={X,Y}) によって生成され、この併合操作こそ「思考表現を創り出す仕組み」の核に他ならないのである。本研究では、この成果を日英語のデータから検証するなか、英語教育への応用の可能性を探った。 具体的には、併合操作に基づく言語研究の成果を日英語のデータから検証することを通して、英語を日本語からかけ離れた言語として捉えてきた従来の考え方から脱却することの重要性を確認した。例を挙げると、wh疑問文では、まず動詞 (V) と目的語 (Obj)、次に主語 (Subj) を順番に併合すると単文 (Subj V Obj) となる。次に目的語を文頭に移動すると、wh疑問文 (What do you like?) に呼応する構造となる。このような（文頭への）移動は英語では義務的であるが、日本語では任意的である。とても複雑な過程を経ているようにもみえるが、これら一連の操作の基本は、英語と日本語が共有する、併合操作の連続適用に他ならない。 本研究では、この新しい視点に基づき、文法教育とその実践モデルをどのように構築することができるか検討した。そのなかで、併合に基づく句構造から文の主語（subject）と動詞（main verb）を正確に把握することができることを示し、文を線的ではなく構造的に捉える文法教育とその実践モデルの構築の重要性を明らかにした。 What separates humans from other animals? That is the language faculty that allows humans to combine two elements repeatedly, yielding hierarchical structures (such as [John [admired Mary]], [太郎が [花子を褒めた]]), which correspond to all sorts of expressions (including new ones). This is the species specific property. If such combinatorial merger operation is the species specific property, it follows that this merger operation (Merge(X, Y)={X, Y}) is working for every human language, and with Merge, we speak and understand a language, and generate new expressions. In this study, drawing data from Japanese and English, we evaluated these findings and explored a new approach to teaching grammar. When we look at the structures of English and Japanese, they are not that different, and it is important to emphasize that they are very similar (if not identical). For example, to form a wh-question (e.g. What do you like?), the following procedure takes place: (i) Merge(V, Obj)={V, Obj}, (ii) Merge(Subj, {V, Obj}})={Subj, {V, Obj}}), and (iii) Merge(Obj, {Subj, {V, Obj}})={Obj, {Subj, {V, Obj}}} (for English, obligatory; for Japanese, optional). This process appears to be complex, but in essence, the final output is the result of nothing but repeated applications of Merge. From this Merge-based perspective, we investigated a new approach to teaching grammar and identified an importance of understanding those hierarchical structures (generated by Merge). Specifically, we pointed out that if students understand the hierarchical structures of the sentences, what counts as the subject or the main verb of the sentence in question automatically follows.
