• Note (General): type:text; 近代文学、とりわけフランス文学において、歴史を描き、語ることは重要な課題だった。フランス革命以後、多くの社会変動を経験したフランスにおいて、作家たちは歴史の意味と方向性を問いかけざるをえなかったからである。同様にして、19世紀の歴史家たちもまた、国民や国家の起源を問うことで、近代の歴史学を確立していった。その意味では近代フランスにおいて、文学（とりわけ小説ジャンル）と歴史学は、歴史の流れを読み解こうとした点で相互補完的だったことを確認できた。 個別の論考やシンポジウムで考察したのは、以下のようなテーマである。 １）少年時代からロマン主義歴史学に親しんでいた作家フロベールは、壮年期に2篇の歴史小説を著わす。『サラムボー』（1862）は古代カルタゴの内乱を主題にして、文明と野蛮の対立を語り、19世紀フランス社会の状況を彷彿させる。『感情教育』（1869）は、1848年の二月革命を物語の主要エピソードに据えて、それをフランス大革命の滑稽なパロディーとして描きだした。両作品に共通するのは、歴史の進歩という思想に対する懐疑である。この点は「文学と認識論」で詳述した。 ２）エミール・ゾラは第二帝政期（1852-70）を時代背景とする一連の小説を書いた。そこに通底するのは、革命後の近代フランスは欲望と野心がぶつかり合い、さまざまな社会集団の利害が衝突するなかで社会と歴史が動いていくという、きわめてダイナミックな歴史観である。この点を『世界文学へのいざない』に収めたゾラ論で論じた。 ３）最後に、現代文学の特徴は、作家たちがとくに第二次世界大戦を舞台として、独自の歴史解釈を提示する作品を発表し、他方で、歴史家のほうはそれに触発されたかのように、文学的な技法や語りの構造を援用して、歴史叙述の新たな地平を開拓していることである。その点を、仏文学会のシンポジウム「文学と歴史（学）の関係を問い直す」の発表で論じた。 In modern French literature, it is often a question of telling and representing history. France is going through a century full of social and political upheavals following the Revolution and writers claim to interpret the meaning and scope of the historical process. Nineteenth-century historians, too, question the origins of nations in establishing modern historiography. Literature and history are therefore in a complementary relationship to the extent that they both believe in the intelligibility of history. I have tried to show how and from what perspective certain 19th and 21st century authors represented history. 1) Interested in history from his childhood, Flaubert was skeptical about the idea of progress in history in his two historical novels: Salammbô and L'Education sentimentale. 2) In his novels, the action of which takes place under the Second Empire, Émile Zola has highlighted a historical dynamism that shakes up multiple desires and ambitions. 3) Today's writers often recount World War II, and they claim to compete with historians in formulating a historical view.
