西郷従道に関する伝記的研究を遂行するため、臨時職員（アルバイト）を雇用し、西郷従道に宛てて政治家・官僚・軍人・家族などが記した書簡、および西郷従道が他の政治家・官僚・軍人などに宛てて記した書簡を網羅的に収集し、これを翻刻する作業を実施した。具体的には、「島津家文書」（東京大学史料編纂所所蔵）に収められている西郷従道宛書簡計268通を複写して入手した。また、西郷従道が記した書簡については、国立国会図書館憲政資料室所蔵・寄託の各関係文書に分散して収められているため、これらの収集・翻刻にあたった。具体的には、「赤松則良関係文書」、「石黒忠悳関係文書」、「伊藤博文関係文書」、「井上馨関係文書」、「岩下方平関係文書」、「上野景範関係文書」、「大木喬任関係文書」、「大久保利謙旧蔵文書」、「大山巌関係文書」、「樺山資紀関係文書」、「川上操六関係文書」、「黒田清隆関係文書」、「憲政史編纂会収集文書」、「憲政資料室収集文書」、「五代友厚関係文書」、「三条家文書」、「斎藤実関係文書」、「品川弥二郎関係文書」、「柴山矢八関係文書」、「龍野周一郎関係文書」、「谷干城関係文書」、「得能良介関係文書」、「長崎省吾関係文書」、「西周関係文書」、「西徳二郎関係文書」、「花房義質関係文書」、「原保太郎関係文書」、「前田正名関係文書」、「牧野伸顕関係文書」、「松方正義関係文書」、「三島通庸関係文書」、「三島弥太郎関係文書」、「宮島誠一郎関係文書」、「宗方小太郎関係文書」、「吉井友実関係文書」、「渡辺千秋関係文書」に収められている西郷従道書簡計132通を収集した。こうした資料を活用して、西郷従道の伝記執筆に取り組んでいく予定である。 To accomplish biographical research on Judo Saigo, I employed a working student. We comprehensively gathered and reprinted letters written to Judo and letters written by Judo. Concretely, we got 268 letters to Judo contained in Shimazu family papers at Historiographical Institute the University of Tokyo. Letters written by Judo are owed by a lot of papers at Modern Japanese Political History Materials Room of National Diet Library. We researched 36 papers and gathered 132 letters written by Judo. I would like to write a biography of Judo using these materials.
