• Note (General): type:text; 本研究は、明治期の日本近代化にとって重要な役割を担った留学生派遣の軌跡を可視化し、その人的ネットワークがどのように構築されたのかを明らかにしようとするものである。 長期に亘る鎖国時代を経て、明治新政府の遂行した政策としての西欧化は対欧州のつながりのなかで、特に西欧圏への留学生派遣、とりわけドイツ語圏への留学生派遣が重要視される。当時の文部省の留学生派遣は明治8(1875)年から始まり、その後10年間を時系列でみると、後半の５年間は全体の留学生の90%近い人数がドイツ語圏であるドイツ・オーストリアに派遣されていたことが指摘されている。明治期を通して概観すると日本人留学生延数683名のうち80％がドイツ語圏への留学者である。当時、まだ小規模国家が多数存在していたドイツ語圏の地域が「ドイツ帝国」として当時プロイセン帝国を中心に国家形成を成し遂げたのは、1871年である。従って、新明治政府とドイツの結びつきは、とりわけプロイセンとのチャンネルにおいて強固であったことが推測される。 本研究では、現存するドイツ語圏の学籍データの一部を紹介し、特定の時代の位置情報を付加することによって、これまで個別のプロファイルとして捉えられてきた当時の日本人留学生たちのモビリティの軌跡を可視化し、その移動の傾向に人的ネットワークの形成を読み取ることができるのか、その全体像を捉えようとするものである。 本研究費の申請時には、本研究全体のステップ(3 年計画)を以下の通りに提示した：1)ドイツ語圏大学教育機関計37都市を対象とした資料のジオコーディングとデータの検証及び修正, 2)付随するメタデータの関連づけ, 3)可視化レイヤーの定義づけと検証, 4)日本国内のネットワークとの繋がりの検証、の４段階である。1)については今年度でほぼ全体の作業を完了しており、2)および 3)の作業は段階的に進めつつある。今後も継続して本研究を進める計画である。 This study aims to visualize the trajectories of Japanese students dispatched overseas, who played an important role in the modernization of Japan in the Meiji era and to clarify how their human networks were formed. Westernization as a policy implemented by the new Meiji government after a long period of national isolation was considered extremely important in the context of Japan's connection to Europe. In particular, the dispatch of Japanese students to Western Europe, and especially to German-speaking countries, is considered to be of great importance. The dispatch of students by the then Ministry of Education began in 1875, and looking chronologically over the following 10 years, it is noted that in the latter five years, nearly 90% of all overseas students were dispatched to the German-speaking countries Germany and Austria. Throughout the Meiji era, 80% of the total 683 Japanese students overseas were sent to German-speaking countries. It was not until 1871 that the German-speaking region, which at the time still consisted of many small states, formed the German Empire, led by the Kingdom of Prussia. Therefore, it can be inferred that the ties between the new Meiji government and Germany were particularly strong through channels with Prussia. This study will visualize the trajectories taken by the Japanese students at the time, who until now have been studied as individual profiles, by introducing some of the existing student enrollment data in German-speaking countries and adding location information for a specific period. Furthermore, it will attempt to grasp the bigger picture by analyzing their mobility trends to clarify the formation of their human networks. At the time of application for this research grant, the overall steps of this study (3-year plan) were presented as follows: 1) geocoding of materials and verification and correction of data for a total of 37 German-speaking university educational institutions, 2) association of accompanying metadata, 3) definition and verification of visualization layers, and 4) verification of links to networks within Japan. Step 1) was almost entirely completed this academic year, and steps 2) and 3) are progressing in stages. We plan to continue with this research going forward.
