本研究では、企業のオープンで国際的なR&D活動が企業のイノベーション成果にいかなる影響を及ぼすかに関する実証分析を行った。このような大きな問題設定の中で、本研究は特にイノベーション成果としてプロセスイノベーションに着目している。R&Dのオープン化、国際化の製品イノベーションに及ぼす影響についてはこれまで様々な研究が行われてきたのに対し、そのプロセスイノベーションに及ぼす影響については、これまで十分な検討が行われてこなかった。更に、企業のＲ＆Ｄの国際化、オープン化が企業のイノベーションに及ぼす影響を分析した既存研究は先進国企業を対象とするものである。先進国においては企業の国際化、オープン化が常態化しており、必ずしも国際化、オープン化自体の影響を測定しづらい状況にある。そこで本研究では、制裁下にあるイランの企業データを対象に、制約下にあってのグローバル化、オープン化の試みがプロセスイノベーション成果に及ぼす影響を実証分析した。分析の結果、国際化、オープン化を通じた海外からの知識獲得はプロセスイノベーションに貢献することが明らかになった。一方、国内のみの知識獲得ではその効果は認められなかった。更に、国内の競争環境が激しい状況では、国際化、オープン化を通じた海外からの知識獲得はなお一層企業のプロセスイノベーションへ大きな効果を及ぼすことも確認された。今年度の研究成果は、オークランド工科大学のOmid Aliasghar教授とリーズ大学のElizabeth Rose教授との共著論文として国際学術誌International Business Reviewの査読論文として掲載された。本論文の研究成果は、本年度の研究テーマである「R&Dの国際化とオープン化とイノベーション」の一部に焦点を当てたものであるが、その重要性が企業のプロセスイノベーションに及ぼす効果として確認された。 This research examined the effect of international, open R&D on innovation of firms. While prior studies have investigated the way international, open R&D influences product innovation, very few studies shed light on the impact on process innovation. Moreover, extant studies predominantly examined the international, open innovation of firms in the advanced countries, while scant attention has been paid to the case of firms based in developing countries. In this research, we highlighted international open R&D by firms in Iran where R&D collaborations across nations are constrained by economic sanctions. We found that international knowledge sourcing by firms was effective for process innovation even for those located in the internationally isolated economy like Iran. Such findings are particularly salient for firms facing competitive intensity of the home country. This research has been published in International Business Review, an international refereed journal, co-authored with Omid Aliasghar of Auckland University of Technology and Elizabeth Rose of the University of Leeds.
