• Note (General): type:text; 20世紀初頭のラテンアメリカで活躍した米国人プロテスタント宣教師サミュエル・ガイ・インマンSamuel Guy Inmanの著作を集め、解読する作業を進めた。市販されている彼の著作はほぼ集め終わった。また、慶應義塾の図書館には、彼が編集長を務めた月刊誌『新しい民主主義』La Nueva Democracia全巻が所蔵されているので、その記事をPDF化して保存し、読み進めていった。カトリシズムが強力なラテンアメリカにおいて、プロテスタント宣教は容易には進まなかったため、プロテスタント宣教師たちは様々な工夫を凝らしたが、インマンは当時米国政府によって推進されていた政治的なパンアメリカニズムを批判的に継承して、宗教的な南北アメリカの一体化を説くことにより、ラテンアメリカの為政者や知識人にプロテスタンティズムの有用性に気付かせる戦略を取ったことが明らかになった。また、インマンに呼応したラテンアメリカの為政者や知識人たちが、『新しい民主主義』に記事を書いているが、それらの記事を解読することで、宗教やプロテスタンティズムに関する彼らの態度が明らかとなり、当時のラテンアメリカにおいてプロテスタンティズムやプロテスタント宣教師が、一般的に思われている以上に大きな影響力を行使していたことが明らかになりつつある。また、いくつかの研究書を通して、その後のラテンアメリカ各地でプロテスタンティズムが拡大していく経緯を確認し、インマンの活動との連続性も解明しつつある。今後もインマンの著作を読み進めることにより、インマンの戦略を解明し、その思想の全体像を描き出したい。現在、ラテンアメリカではプロテスタンティズムが拡大しているが、その前史として、インマンらが活動した時代を位置づけることができればと考えている。 I have been devoted to collect and read writings of Samuel Guy Inman, an American Protestant missionary in early 20th century Latin America. I have obtained most of the books written by him. The Library of Keio University has a complete set of the monthly La Nueva Democracia, edited by him, so I digitized the articles and read them. In Latin America the power of the Roman Catholic Church was so enormous that the Protestant missionary works grew sluggish and Protestant leaders figured out many ways to propagate their religion. I have clarified that Inman, one of such leaders, modeled religious Pan-Americanism as a strategy on political one promoted by the then U. S. government, in order to open the eyes of Latin American politicians and intellectuals to the utility of Protestantism that would advocate the religious unity and cooperation of all American nations. By reading articles of La Nueva Democracia written by some Latin Americans in favor of his proposition, I can say Protestantism and Protestant missionaries exerted more influence on Latin America than we now think. Based on some studies that have revealed the subsequent Protestant expansion in Latin America, my study is making clear its relation to Inman's works. In future I would like to contribute to further clarification of his whole thought.
