• Note (General): type:text; 本研究は，類型論的に異なる日本語と英語（以下，日英語）をとりあげ，修飾関係，束縛関係，一致関係という3種類の文法関係が，線的順序ではなく階層的な統辞構造に依存することを明らかにし，その構造依存性を言語の生得的な仕組みから演繹的帰結として導き出すことを試みた。 具体例をあげると、Carefully the guy who fixed the car packed his toolsにおいてcarefullyが修飾できるのは，線的順序の近いfixedではなく，遠いpackedであり、The friends of the boys like each otherにおいてeach otherの解釈を束縛できるのは，線的順序の近いthe boysではなく，遠いthe friendsであり、The bombing of the cities is a crime/The bombings of the city are a crimeにおいてbe動詞が一致しているのは，線的順序の近いcities /cityではなく，遠いbombing/bombingsである。線的順序では説明できない依存関係が言語に現れるのはなぜか。 本研究では、この問いに取り組むなか、日英語の統辞構造の比較研究を推進した。男の子と女の子の母親が笑った/ The mother of the boy and the girl laughedでは日英語とも二通りの解釈を許すが， be動詞の一致が顕在化するThe mother of the boy and the girl is laughing/are laughingでは多義性は失われる。本研究では，この一致現象を手がかりに，全ての文法関係が線的順序ではなく階層的な統辞構造に依存せざるを得ない理由を生得的な言語の仕組みに還元することを試みた。 本研究は，Chomsky 2021において提示された極小モデルの枠組みを採択し，修飾関係，束縛関係，一致関係という3種類の文法関係を中心に，日英語が示す構造依存性を捉え直し、その本質が、文法関係は線的順序ではなく階層関係を生成する基本操作に依存していることを明らかにした。さらにその文法関係はその基本操作から生成される階層関係の最も基本的な組み合わせに留まる可能性を追求した。 This study, drawing data from English and Japanese, two typologically different languages, shows that grammatical relations exhibited in modification, binding, and agreement, are all structure-dependent, not linear-dependent, and argues that such structure-dependency naturally follows from the innate linguistic mechanism. To be specific, consider the following cases: (1) Carefully the guy who fixed the car packed his tools. (2) The friends of the boys like each other. (3) The bombing of the cities is a crime. (4) The bombings of the city are a crime. In (1), what "carefully" modifies is "packed" not linearly closer "fixed"; in (2), what binds "each other" is "the friends" not linearly closer "the boys"; and in (3) and (4), what "be" agrees with is "bombing/bombings" not linearly closer "the city/the cities." Why do languages behave this way, and not some other way? To answer this question, it is important to note that both Japanese and English exhibit ambiguity, as in (5) and (6), but in English, subject agreement can resolve such ambiguity. So, there is no ambiguity in (7) and (8). (5) 男の子と女の子の母親が笑った (6) The mother of the boy and the girl laughed. (7) The mother of the boy and the girl is laughing. (8) The mother of the boy and the girl are laughing. Phenomena such as these suggest that all grammatical relations are sensitive to hierarchical structures, not linear ones, and this study argues that there is no choice: such structure-dependency follows from the innate linguistic mechanism. This study, adopting the framework outlined by Chomsky (2021), suggests a possibility that modification, binding, and agreement phenomena all receive a unified principled analysis. They are based on the core relations, generated by the universal structure-building mechanism.
