本研究では、国家の規模とガバナンスの理論化に挑戦した。そのため、まず古典的な政治経済学の歴史的・思想的知見を再検討することによって、いくつかの仮説を抽出した。その上でこれらの仮説を検証するために、広く用いられてきた統計学的手法に加えて、機械学習や計算機実験といった新たな手法を用いた仮説検証にも注力した。その際、多様な分野の専門家の間の分野横断的な対話を通じて、この学際的なプロジェクトを実行し、一方でそれぞれの専門分野における固有の前提を意識しつつも、それぞれの分野の伝統的手法では等閑視されがちだった、このような大規模な社会現象の複合性や歴史的動態にアプローチすることができた。 This research project tried to address questions related to the size of countries and their behavior. The project team started this research by working out several hypotheses through reexamination of classical works on political economy. We then tried to test these hypotheses by usual statistical methods. In addition, we applied new methods such as machine learning and computer experiment to our attempts to test the hypotheses. We carried out this multidisciplinary project through constant inter-disciplinary discussion while paying attention to distinctive premises of each discipline. By doing so, we could approach the complexity and historical dynamics of the macro social phenomena, which were often ignored by conventional approach employed by each discipline.
