Note (General): 北海道の白亜系蝦夷層群とカナダ国BC州ホーンビー島の地質調査を行った．ノジュール試料を100個以上採集し，産状，保存状態等について現地で記載した．実験室では切断・研磨を行い，画像取込みとスケッチにより記載し，色，含有化石等に基づき分類した．それらの酸素・炭素同位体比を分析した結果，二割程度の試料は予期された海底水温から推定される値に一致した．以上に基づき分析前に評価対象としうる試料を高確率で抽出するための基準を作成した．地質調査中の観察と切断面の観察による二段階スクリーニングにより，効率が高い海底古水温推定手法が構築できた．本手法は取り扱いが簡単であり，簡易な古水温計として普及するだろう．
More than 100 calcareous nodules from Cretaceous Yezo Group in Hokkaido and Nanaimo Group in Hornby Island, BC, Canada were collected and their occurrences and preservation statuses were described. Classification was also done in the lab based on the color and fossil inclusion observed on their cut and polished surfaces. Carbon and oxygen isotope values from ~20% of the collected samples correspond to the expected values calculated from existing paleothermometry. This data set allowed us to construct criteria for screening nodules for paleothermometry. Two-step screening, i.e. observation during sample collection and observation on cut surfaces, provides simple but efficient method for mudstone paleothermometry using calcareous nodules.
