当研究の目的は,対称性の助けに頼らないゲージ・湯川セクタ統一の可能性を追究することで,特に,結合定数還元原理に基づくゲージ・湯川セクタ統一理論を考察した.この方法には,対称性に基づく統一方法に潜在している対称性の破れという本質的な問題がないのが特色であり,この研究で,結合定数還元原理に基づくゲージ・湯川セクタ統一理論の現実性が明らかにされた.特に,以下の様な事に関する研究が重点的に行われた.ゲージ・湯川セクタ統一理論で予測されるボトムクォークとトップクォークの質量とFERMILABの実験結果の一致の確認,陽子崩壊に関する現象論的考察を基にした,パラメータの許される領域の制限,ゲージ群が拡張された超対称ゲージ・ユカワ統一模型の考察,既知の超対称ゲージ・ユカワ統一模型の実験値的選別可能性,対称性ゲージ・ユカワ統一と弱電磁理論のゲージ対称性の動力学的破れとの整合性,超対称性の軟らかい破れの項のフレーバー構造に関する考察,超対称性理論での陽子崩壊と軽いニュートリノの存在の関係.これらの研究の結果は,数々の権威ある国際会議で発表され,標準理論の湯川セクタの構造の起源を解明する一つの方向性を与えるものであると認識されるようになった.更に,結合定数還元原理に基づくゲージ・湯川セクタ統一に超対称性を破るセクタを加え,超対称性を柔らかく破る項の統一が図られ、統一された超対称性を柔らかく破る項はユニバーサルな総和則を満たしていることが見い出された.しかも,それがある仮定の下で4次元超弦理論のそれと一致していることが判明し,平成10年度以降の研究課題の動機となった.
The essence of theoretical efforts in Elementary Particle Physics is to understand the present day tree parameters the Standard Model (SM) in terms of a few fundamental ones. The traditional way of reducing the number of parameters is to assume that the world is more symmetric. Acelebrated example along this line is the idea of Grand Unified Theories (GUTs), whose gauge sector provided us with a testable prediction for one of the low energy gauge couplings. A natural extension of the GUT idea is to relate the gauge and Yukawa sectors of a theory. In the present research we investigated supersymmetric GUTs in which the Gauge-Yukawa Unification (GYU) is achieved using the principles of reduction of couplings and finiteness. The main results of the present study are the following :1) We showed that it is possible to construct supersymmetric GUTs with GYU in the third generation that can predict the bottom and top quark masses in accordance with the recent experimental data. This means tha t the top-bottom hierarchy could be explained in these models, in a similar way as the hierarchy of the gauge couplings of the SM can be explained if one assumes the existence of a unifying gauge symmetry at the GUT scale. 2) We investigated different GUTs with GYU.It is found that there are equiv-top-mass-lines in the Yukawa couplings so that two different GYU models on the same line cannot be distinguished by the top mass M_t alone. If they are on different lines, they could be distinguished by M_t (IR). 3) We considered the inclusion of the soft supersymmetry-breaking (SSB) sector into the program of GYU,and found that there exists in softly-broken supersymmetric GUTs with GYU a RG invariant sum rule of the SSB parameters that is universal in character. We, moreover, found that this universal sum rule is also satisfied in a wide class of four-dimensional superstring models.From these result we expect that there will be a close connection between supersymmeteric GUTs with GYU and superstring models, and we hope that further investigations along this line might yield deeper understandings of the theoretical nature of the interactions of the elementary particles.
