Note (General): ヘム代謝系・鉄代謝系は、ヘム分解酵素・ヘムオキシゲナーゼ(HO)を中心に、生体防御や生体調節に重要な役割を果たしている。代表者らは、ヘムによるHO-1の発現誘導メカニズムを解明し、種々の物質などによるヘム分解系調節と、ヘム代謝と鉄代謝の関連を見出してきた。本研究では、食品成分を中心とした種々の物質によるヘム代謝系・鉄代謝系の調節メカニズムの解明と、医薬品などへの応用可能性を探った。その結果、ヘム代謝や鉄代謝を調節する化合物群が、原虫の増殖を抑制することを見出した。これは、感染症とヘム代謝系・鉄代謝系の関連についての基盤的な新知見であり、治療応用の可能性を示した成果である。
