田螺山遺跡の各種自然遺物を対象としてさまざまな分析を実施した。その結果、この遺跡は紀元前5000年-3500年頃の遺跡であり、最終的には海水面の上昇により水没したことが明らかとなった。その住民は、狩猟・漁撈・採集により淡水域周辺の資源を中心とする多様な食料を獲得すると同時に、稲作にも従事しており、漆や茶の利用が始まっていたことも判明した。一方、海産資源の利用は低調で、イノシシ(ブタ)もまだ完全には家畜化されていないことがわかった。
