代表的なプラスチック材料であるポリエチレンやポリプロピレンの延伸および溶融・結晶化過程における分子レベルの構造変化を明らかにするために、ラマン分光法によるその場分光測定装置を作製した。ポリエチレンやポリプロピレンを一軸延伸すると、延伸方向への分子配向が進展するが、降伏領域においては、一旦延伸軸から傾いた方向へ配向し、分子鎖と垂直な方向に圧縮力が印加することが分かった。このことは、球晶が破砕して生成したラメラクラスターユニットの回転が降伏後の配向の起源であることを示唆している。
In situ Raman apparatus was developed to observe the microscopic deformation and melting/crystallization behavior of semi-crystalline polymers such as polyethylene and polypropylene. During the uniaxial stretching of these semi-crystalline polymeric solids, it was found that the molecular chains orient toward a direction tilt from the stretching axis in the yielding region, and that compression stress was applied perpendicular to the polymer chains. These peculiar deformation suggests that the rotational motions of the lamellar cluster units which is formed by the collapse of the spherulites are the origin of the orientation after the yielding.
