Note (General): 我々の共同研究者によって、超放射機構で大強度超短パルスマイクロ波(HPM)を効率よく作ることが近年可能になった。「ギガワット級・短パルス・マイクロ波」は1回の照射あたりのジュール数が小さく、加熱を伴わないで高周波の強電場を発生することができる利点がある。その強度は自由空間中でガスの放電を起こすことができるほどである。しかしながら、国内ではこのHPMの研究が少なく、応用に関する研究もなされていない。この研究では、上記のような強力なHPMの発生源の開発と、応用のために適切な輸送の形態の研究を行なうことを目的とした。そして、その発展としてマイクロ波によるプラズマ生成やアブレーションについての実験を行なうことを第2の目的とした。この3年間の研究によって、HPMの発生源の開発を行なった。また自由空間でのマイクロ波の利用を目的に、自由空間中への放出はほぼ可能となった。応用にっいては、時間がなく、基本的なレベルにとどまった。しかし、HPM応用への知見を深めることができ、当初の目標は達成したと考えている。今回の成果には以下のようなものがある。1.「輸送」について研究した。特に自由空間への放出は重点的に研究した。2.自由空間で「プラズマ生成」を行い、その有効性を示した。3.現在ある5GHzの後進波発振管(BWO)の出力向上に努めた。4.周波数がこれまでの2倍の10GHzのBWOの開発を新たに行った。これにより、自由空間での強度を上げた。5.HPMの応用として、プラズマのパルス反射計の光源としても検討すべき。
New type of high power microwave sources, HPM, are recently proposed by Russian theorist and developed by us. This type of HPM is characterized by a strong sharp pulse. The oscillator of HPM is operated in superradiative regime, “SR" In the SR regime, energy flows from electron beam to HPM in one direction, and is not reversed. The HPM has strong electric field, though the total joule per one pulse is low. The peak power of HPM is a few Mega-watts to a few Giga-watts, which is about thousands times larger than the constant wave type oscillators. It can induce breakdown in the gas in free space, and produces plasma. The application is not only for radar (radio detection and ranging), for example, diagnostic in large and high temperature plasma. HPM will realize other unique methods to basic plasma science. It can be applied to plasma production in free space, study on non-linear phenomena, ablation on dielectric surface, etc. In this research, we studied the generation that includes SR, and the transport for these applications.Backward wave oscillator, BWO, is one of the most powerful microwave source for Giga-watts. Powerful BWO is already developed for HPM of 5 GHz by us. This time, the power became much higher. BWO for higher frequency, 10 GHz, is newly developed to achieve higher power density in free space.A quasi-optical antenna, called “Vlasov antenna", is studied intensively in this research. It makes possible launching HPM from waveguides to free space. Several antenna designs are tested and its conversion efficiency is investigated at the wavelength 6 cm, i. e. 5 GHz. The wavelength is not short compared to the diameter of wave guide. The conversion efficiency can be improved by increasing the diameter of the final waveguide. It changes from 15% to 75% in the experiment.
