咽頭扁桃が薬剤耐性菌に暴露されることで反復性中耳炎を発症する乳幼児がいる。この最大の要因は宿主側の免疫能であると考えられている。Ｍ細胞は鼻咽頭関連リンパ組織において病原微生物等の外来抗原の取り込みを行い、粘膜免疫に重要な役割を担っている。このＭ細胞がその重要な内的要因であると考えられた。しかし「咽頭扁桃におけるＭ細胞の量的あるいは質的状態のよくない患児では抗原の取り込み能が減少し、初期免疫の機能が低下するために上気道難治性感染症および反復性中耳炎をひきおこしやすい」という仮説の立証はできなかった。
Some infants develop repetitive otitis media as pharyngeal tonsils are exposed to drug resistant bacteria. This maximum factor is thought to be the immunocompetence of the host side. M cells take up foreign antigens such as pathogenic microorganisms in nasopharyngeal related lymphoid tissues and play an important role in mucosal immunity. This M cell was considered to be an important internal factor. However,the hypothesis that "Inadequate quantitative or qualitative status of M cells in the pharyngeal tonsils decreases antigen uptake capacity and decreases the function of early immunity, leading to upper airway refractory infection and repetitive otitis media" could not be proved.
