超伝導の発現機構が未解明な非従来型の超伝導物質CeCoIn5を、超高真空中で劈開し、その劈開表面における物理特性を、走査型トンネル顕微鏡（STM）と呼ばれる原子分解の顕微鏡を用いて、500 mKまでの低温、7 Tまでの強磁場という複合極限環境で調査した。STMにおける探針を表面に極限まで近づけ、精密に探針と表面の距離を調整しながら測定することで、表面に並んだコバルト原子がある特定の原子軌道を選択的に選ぶことで、「軌道秩序」と呼ばれる秩序構造が表面に出現し、超伝導と共存していることが明らかになった。この新たな発見は、この物質の超伝導発現機構を解明するための新たな糸口となる可能性を含んでいる。
We utilize low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope (STM) in high magnetic fields to investigate the unconventional superconductor CeCoIn5 whose superconducting pairing mechanism is not yet clarified. We cleaved the sample in our ultra-high-vacuum chamber and performed STM measurements without exposing to the air. We reduced the tip-sample distance extremely by precisely controlling the tip height, we discovered for the first time the emergence of surface-induced orbital ordering of d-orbitals of cobalt atoms at top surfaces. This orbital order coexists with the superconductivity and therefore it might provide a new insight for understanding of the superconductivity of this material.
