大震災などの自然災害において多くのガス壊疽患者を発生させるウェルシュ菌は、複雑な遺伝子発現調節機構により多種の病原因子の発現を調節している。本研究では、ウェルシュ菌において発現されている新規のsRNA分子を多数同定し、その中には本菌のグローバル調節系によって発現調節を受けているRNAが存在することを明らかにした。さらに既知の調節RNAであるvirXの機能解析を行い、virXが毒素産生調節のみならず、ウェルシュ菌食中毒の原因となる腸管毒素の産生に関与する芽胞形成をも制御していることを明らかにした。
Clostridium perfringens is a causative agent for gas gangrene and controls toxin production via complex regulatory networks. In this study, we identified many novel sRNAs in C. perfringens and showed that some of the sRNAs are also regulated by a major regulatory system for toxin production. Furthermore, we found that one of the sRNAs, virX is involved in the regulation of spore formation which turns into production of enterotoxin for food poisoning.
