ほ乳類と異なり、魚類では中枢神経の再生が可能である。これまで我々は魚類視神経損傷後の網膜内で一酸化窒素合成酵素(NOS)の発現が高まることを見つけていた。本研究ではNOSと神経再生の関連について詳細なシグナル解析とともに調べた。その結果、視神経損傷後の網膜神経節細胞層で増加する神経型のNOSはレチノイン酸で誘導され細胞内で産生された一酸化窒素がグアニル産シクラーゼ活性化を介してcGMP依存的な軸索伸長を示すことがわかった。
