う蝕や歯周病が進展して発症する口腔の化膿性感染症の病巣と同じ患者の歯垢中の細菌の組成や性状とに何らかの関連があるかどうかを解明するため研究を行った。膿と歯垢を同じ患者から採取し、培養細菌学検査や細菌の遺伝子調査を施行した。その結果、膿と歯垢では、その細菌組成や個々の細菌の性状に違いがあり関連はなかった。患者の歯垢の細菌学特徴から口腔の化膿性感染症の原因菌の性状を推察することは困難であると結論する。
