脳の形成過程において、規則的な神経細胞の移動が非常に重要な役割を果たすと考えられており、神経細胞移動による脳の層構造形成過程は特に注目されている。ショウジョウバエ視覚中枢はほ乳類の脳と多くの構造的特徴を共有しており、脳神経回路の形成機構を研究する上で非常に優れたモデル系である。各神経細胞の特徴的な移動パターンを制御する遺伝子を探索し、その機能解析を通じて細胞移動によって神経回路・層構造という秩序が産み出されるメカニズムを解析した。Bsh陽性細胞(Mi1)とLim1陽性細胞(Lawf2)の間の相互作用を解析している過程で、Lim1陽性細胞がBsh陽性細胞などの他のメダラ神経細胞とは由来が異なり、メダラ後方に位置するGPC領域から接線方向の移動によって供給されることが分かった。この時、Lim1陽性細胞はBsh陽性細胞と隣り合った状態で移動すると考えられる。これらの神経細胞において特異的に発現するガイダンス分子を探索したところ、Slit/RoboおよびNetrin/Unc5シグナルがこれら神経細胞の位置決定において重要であることが示唆された。興味深いことにLim1陽性細胞はSlitとUnc5を、Bsh陽性細胞はRobo3とNetrinBを発現していることが明らかになった。従って、これら由来の異なる２種類の神経細胞はSlit/RoboおよびNetrin/Unc5シグナルを介して双方向に制御しあっていると考えられる。
