熱帯域に生息するOmphisa fuscidentalis(和名タケノメイガ)はその生活環に幼虫休眠期を有する。タイ北部山岳地帯では、幼虫は9月に老熟し休眠に入り、翌年5月に蛹化するという長い休眠期間を幼虫のままで過ごす。幼虫の休眠場所は竹の節間であり、そこにタンパク性分泌物で節をまたぐように隔壁をつくる。隔壁の外側はカビなどが繁殖するものの、幼虫が存在する内側にカビなどが生えることはない。幼虫の休眠生理を研究している時、幼虫体内に新規組織を見いだした。これは一層の細胞層からなるかなり太めの管構造をしており、中には液状の脂肪酸エステルが蓄積していた。休眠環境に進入しうる現地から見いだされるカビ5種類に対する抗カビ活性を測定した結果、T. harrium他4種類に対しては、弱い抗カビ活性を示したのに対した。一方、竹の節間から採取したカビに対しては強い効果を示した。これは、幼虫が蓄積している油状物質が生息環境を防衛する上で一定の役割を果たしていることを示唆する。現在の所このカビの同定には至ってはいない。今後、現地で栽培植物上で繁殖するカビに焦点を当て、さらに種々のカビに対する抗カビ活性を測定しこの油状物質の種特異性をスクリーニングする事により、応用面での可能性を探る予定である。
