ドイツ・Regensburg大のGiessibl教授との国際共同研究として、原子間力顕微鏡と走査型トンネル顕微鏡による振動分光法を組み合わせ、顕微鏡の金属探針と表面上の単一分子や単一原子との相互作用過程を調べた。まず、精密な振動分光が可能になるように装置改良を行い、更に、探針表面間の距離が短い領域において二つの手法の同時計測ができるように測定法を改善した。そして、（１）探針との相互作用による分子の構造変化を含む振動エネルギーの変化を、引力から斥力領域にいたるまで、これまでにない精度で理解した。一方で（２）表面上の原子の場合はその振動エネルギーの計測に用いる信号がとても小さい事がわかった。
By combining atomic force microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy with inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy, the interaction process between the metallic tip of a microscope and a single molecule/a single atom has been investigated by collaborating with Prof. Giessibl in Regensburg University. Firstly, the measurement system had been improved such that (1) the high-resolution vibrational spectroscopy is possible and (2) both of AFM and IETS measurements are possible for a very small tip surface distance. Then, the interaction process between a single molecule and a metallic tip including the molecular configuration change has been deeply understood for the attractive force regime to the repulsive force regime. On the other hand, it was found that the inelastic signal for a single atom on a surface is considerably weaker than the case of a single molecule.
