バントゥー系アフリカ人とカラード（ケープタウン周辺の先住民、解放奴隷、「混血」の人々）の分断は、南アフリカの人種・民族がもっとも大がかりに分割された過程だった。本研究では、これを20世紀前半期の左翼政治運動について検討した。より具体的には、共産党が1928年前後、アフリカ人の民族解放闘争に特化し、1930年代後半、トロツキストの浸透したカラードの組織化を断念する過程を分析した。
The division of Bantu Africans and Coloureds (indigenous people, emancipated slaves and the 'mixed' around Cape Town) was in scale the largest process of divide and rule among South African races and ethnic groups. This research explored the problem, highlighting the left political movements in the first half of the twentieth century; the Communist Party of South Africa concentrated its struggle upon the national liberation of Africans around 1928, while in the late 1930s it abandoned organizing Coloureds into whom the Trotskyists infiltrated.
