文化を扱う国際機構・ユネスコは、一見、権力政治とは無関係なもののようである。しかし、歴史認識が外交問題化する現代の国際社会において、特定の歴史的文化物を人類共通の遺産として認定するユネスコ事業も、国際政治の動向と影響を及ぼしあう。本研究では、ユネスコの遺産事業が特定国家の歴史認識に関する利益と結びつくことで、文化を通じた諸国民の間の協力という事業本来の目的が脅かされるという政治化の仕組みを、東アジアの事例を分析して解明する。この研究成果は、7本の英語論文、2本の日本語論文の形で公刊された。また、計9回に及ぶ国際学会での報告により、海外の研究にも一定程度のインパクトを与えるものとなった。
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has been largely dismissed by International Relations researchers as a mere cultural organization. Compared to other international organizations, it does not seem an important target of analysis because of its emphasis on culture instead of security and economics. However, UNESCO's projects/programmes occasionally become a battleground of state conflicts particularly in the field of cultural heritage. This research project aims to uncover the hidden links between culture and politics in UNESCO by examining a number of heritage conflicts and controversies in East Asia. The outcome of this research has been published in the form of seven English-written articles and two Japanese-written articles. The principal investigator has also given a presentation at nine international academic conferences. Overall, the research outcome has been well received in English-speaking academia.
