座骨神経軸索切断モデルラットを用いて軸索再生細胞の数を経時的に調査した結果、軸索切断後2週間の時点から軸索再生細胞が確認され、その後その数には増加傾向が見られた。また、軸索切断後の神経細胞核に特異的に発現する物質であるc-junや、坐骨神経細胞の神経伝達物質であるアセチルコリンの合成酵素(ChAT)と分解酵素(AChE)の発現の変化を免疫組織化学染色によって調べたところ、c-junについては変動が大きく、軸索再生と細胞死のスウィッチングとなる証拠が得られなかった。また、軸索再生細胞におけるChATの発現率は再生が見られた時点では低い値を示したが(26.8±2.3%)、その後生存期間が長くなるにつれて上昇傾向を示し、軸索切断後8週間の時点で79,4%に達した。一方、AChEについては生存期間の長短に伴う明確な差異は確認されなかった。また、行動実験によって運動能力の機能回復を観察した結果、運動機能回復が見られはじめたのは軸索切断後4週間の時点からであり、軸索再生細胞の出現と比べて遅延が確認された。これらのことから、軸索切断を受けた運動神経細胞において、軸索再生の過程でアセチルコリンの生成が抑制されるものと推測される。
