現生のストロマトライトの生息条件、環境、生態系、生体鉱物の形成過程をミクロンレベルで明らかにし、地球環境の変遷(酸素発生や光合成生物の出現など)を生体鉱物化作用の観点から研究を行った。現在の地球環境を研究することにより、生命が誕生した始生代の古環境を推測し、当時の地球表層の大気の状態、らん藻類が大量に繁茂したであろう水圏の様子が描き出されるが,本研究は生命の誕生と地球上に出現した酸素呼吸機能との関係を各種の電子顕微鏡の手法で解読した。代表者の田崎は国内外の温泉、間欠泉や鉱山、鉱床から多種多様なバイオマット(生物被膜)や現生のストロマトライトを見つけ、電子顕微鏡を用いて調べた結果、微生物の細胞壁やコロニーにCa,Si,S,Fe,Mn,P,Srなどを含んだカルサイト、マグネタイト、ブ-セライト、マグヘマイト、粘土鉱物などの生体鉱物が生成しているのを発見し、生体鉱物の多様性について国際雑誌や国際会議などで報告した。日本におけるバイオマットについて,29ケ所をカタログとして日本語(91ページ),英語(65ページ)で公表した。
