微生物のコロニーが作った縞状の堆積構造物であるストロマトライトは先カンブリア時代にシアノバクテリア(藍藻)によって大規模に形成され、多くの古生物学研究者によって研究されてきた.ところが、近年、イエローストン、アイスランド、オーストラリア、ポーランドなどの温泉や地熱地帯にはシアノバクテリアのみならずさまざまな微生物が生息しており、現世のストロマトライトとしてその生成機構に興味がもたれてきた.今回、南西諸島の深海底のクリーンスモーカーの外壁にも耐熱性バクテリアがバイオマットを作り、バライトや石英の結晶を形成することを明らかにした.また、国内外の温泉や鉱山(イエローストン、アイスランド、韓国、南極バンダ湖、オニックス川、北海道阿寒、知床、恐山、金沢、富山、島根)からさまざまなバイオマットを見つけ、走査型および透過型電子顕微鏡、エネルギー分散分析、蛍光顕微鏡、X線粉末回折分析で調べた結果、Ca,Si,S,Fe,Mn,P,Srなどを含んだ方解石、ブ-セライト、水酸化鉄鉱物などの生体鉱物を発見し、生体鉱物の多様性とバクテリアの核形成について国際雑誌や国際会議などで報告した.
