本研究は構造物の「形と強さ」の相関のメカニズムを種々の構造目的と別約条件の下で解明し、その結果から普遍的な法則性を示す数理モデルを導出することを当初の目的とした。ところが研究メンバーの活発な討論から,機能を「強さ」のみに限定せず,かつ「形」も機構等を含む広範囲なものとすることが人工物設計の方法論を解明する上で重要であること,さらにそれらのヒントは生物の構造・組織を調べることから得られるという考え方に至った。そこで生物について次の各視点を設定して,その数理モデルの確立を図る研究の基礎と,それを重点領域研究へ発展させるための方法論を追求した。・生物的戦略の解明・形態形成・消滅機構のモデル化とその応用・学習・適応性の数理モデルとその応用・柔軟性・軽量性構造モデルの確立とその応用・冗長性・頑健性構造モデルの確立とその応用これらの成果は別紙報告書としてまとめられ,かつそれを基に「生物的戦略を用いた人工物の機能・形態決定法の研究」という重点領域研究申請書が作られた。
