養護学校に在籍する中等部・高等部の生徒を対象として、代表的なバランス運動である片足立ちの測定を、言語教示にのみ基づいて行う場合と、高さ20cmの台の上に軸足を載せて行う場合との2つで行った。また、一方、同一の被験者で、言語による行動調整の水準をGarfieldのmotorimpersistence testの3項目で測定した。片足立ちの成績の、言語教示にのみ基づいて行う場合と台の上で行う場合の差を調べたところ、一般的には、台の上で行う場合の方が成績が高くなることが示された。そして、ビデオ記録によってその際にフォームの変化が見られるか否かを解析したところ、大きな変化はなく、このことから、その差は主に、台を用いることによる心理学的な変化に起因するものと考えられた。そして、言語教示にのみ基づいて行う場合と台の上で行う場合の差を、言語による行動調整の水準と相関させてみたところ、言語による行動調整の水準の低い者ほど、言語教示にのみ基づいて行う場合と台の上で行う場合の差が大きいことが明らかになり、このことから、台を用いることによる心理学的な効果とは、内的に不十分な行動調整能力を、外的な状況が補償するということにあるのではないかと考えられた。このことを確認するため、片足立ちと同様の運動行動である立ち幅跳びを、同一の被験者を対象として、言語教示にのみ基づいて行う場合と目標点を設定して行う場合とで測定したところ、一般に目標点を提示して測定を行うほうが、高い成績が得られることが示され、そこで特に高い成績を示した者は、台の上での片足立ちで特に高い成績を示した者と一致していた。
