太陽熱を利用した吸着冷房システムの温室の夜間冷房への適用可能性を検討することを目的に、まず、いくつかの吸着材(シリカゲル、ゼオライト、セピオライト)の吸湿特性(吸着平衡関係)を調べた。このうち、温度差による平衡吸着量の差が大きいことから、吸着冷房システムにはシリカゲル-水系が現時点で最も適していることを明らかにした。つぎに、この方式が原理通りに機能するのか、機能するとすればシステムの規模はどのくらいにすべきかという点について検討するめに、吸着、再生過程における熱・物質移動モデルに基づき敷地面積100m^2の温室の夜間冷房を想定した電算機シミュレーションを行った。ただし、吸着、再生の1サイクルの所要時間は実用上の便宜を考えて1日とした。その結果、表面積36m^2の吸着材層を用いれば本システムが機能することが理論的に予測できた。しかし、これでも吸着材表面積は相当に大きい上、吸着材の再生には我が国における夏場の日射強度の2倍の熱が必要であることが分かった。すなわち、現段階では太陽熱だけの単独利用によるシステムの稼働は不可能であり、再生促進のために例えば、温風加熱、ガスバーナー加熱、あるいは工場廃熱の利用などによる補助的熱供給が必要となることが示唆された。したがって、実用化に当たっては、吸着冷房装置の効率(成績係数)アップ、再生過程促進のための補助熱源の導入方法の検討が当面解決すべき重要課題と考えられる。加えて、吸着、再生サイクルを何回か繰り返した場合の再現性、外気温など外部条件の変化の影響を検討することなどが今後の課題として残された。
