精神遅滞児の言語による行動調整能力を調べるために、Garfieldのmotor impersistence testの3項目により(閉眼持続、開口持続、舌出持続)を行い、学童期以降でも行動調整能力発達の画期とされる4歳半の水準に達しない者が精神遅滞児に少なからず存在することが明らかとなった。また、これらの者の運動機能を平均台歩き、片足立ちというバランス運動に関して測定し、その関連を見たところ、平均台歩きでは、行動調整能力が低い者にもバランス運動の成績の高い者が見られるのに対し、片足立ちでは行動調整能力が低くなるほど、その成績も低くなるという関係が明瞭であるという結果を得た。このことから、平均台歩きでは、平均台という外的な物がなすべき行動を直観的に示す役割を果し、内的な行動調整能力を補償するのではないかと考え、片足立ちも、平均台歩きにおける平均台と同様の外的になすべき行動を示す物が存在する事態で行えば、行動調整能力の低い者でも本来のバランス能力を十分に発現し得るのではないかと考えた。こうした考察を受けて、片足のみが載る台の上で片足立ちを行うことを求め、その成績と通常の片足立ちの成績とを比較した。その結果、行動調整能力の低い者で台上片足立ちの成績の上昇が著しかった。成績が上昇した者で運動フォームの違いが台に載ることで生じたか否かをビデオ記録により検討したところ、そうした者はほとんど見られず、片足立ちと台上片足立ちの成績の変化はもっぱら内的な過程の変化によるものと考えられた。以上のことは、外的になすべき行動を示す事態で運動行動を行うことが、運動能力自体の改善につながるという指導法の原則を示唆するものであると考えられた。
