個体群生態学的な研究により、カシノナガキクイムシはイニシアルアタックの際に、衰弱木や感受性の個体を選択的に攻撃するのではなく、無差別に攻撃していた。穿孔数やカシナガの繁殖成功度は、樹木の生死ではなく過去の穿孔の有無によって強く影響されていた。過去にカシナガの穿入を受けていない7本のミズナラを測定対象とし、樹幹北側の地際部と地上高150cmの位置で、各2点ずつの温度測定を行った。その結果、1)150cm部位と地際部の温度差(以下、温度差)は、特に6〜8月の高温時(日最高気温約25℃以上)に大きくなった。2)秋までに被害を受け葉が褐変または萎凋した個体(以下、被害個体)は、1個体を除き、カシナガ穿入前(6月上・中旬)に高温時の温度差が大きかった。3)上記例外の1個体は150cm部位と地際部の温度の平均値(以下、平均温度)については他の個体よりも高めで、最も早くカシナガの穿入を受け、枯死した。樹幹2ヶ所の温度差と平均温度によって、樹体の健全性を評価し、カシノナガキクイムシの穿孔に伴う枯死や萎凋を予測できる可能性がある。
