• Note (General): 本報は、深地層の科学的研究のうち、「地質環境の長期安定性に関する研究」について、第2期中期計画期間(平成22年度$\sim$平成26年度)の3年目である平成24年度に実施した研究開発に係る成果を取りまとめたものである。第2期中期計画期間においても第1期中期計画に引き続き、最終処分事業の概要調査や安全審査基本指針などの検討・策定に研究成果を反映できるよう、(1)概要調査などに必要となる、自然現象に関する過去の記録や現在の状況を調査するための体系的な技術の整備(調査技術の開発・体系化)、(2)変動シナリオを考慮した安全評価の基盤となる、将来の自然現象に伴う地質環境の変化を予測・評価するための手法の整備(長期予測・影響評価モデルの開発)のほか、(3)最先端の分析装置などを用いた放射年代測定や鍵層の高分解能同定法などによる編年技術の高度化(年代測定技術の開発)を進めている。本報では、それぞれの研究分野に係る科学的・技術的背景を解説するとともに、主な研究成果および今後の課題などについて述べる。; This annual report documents the progress of R\&D in the 3rd fiscal year during the JAEA 2nd Midterm Plan (FY 2010 - 2014) to provide the scientific base for assessing geosphere stability for long-term isolation of the high-level radioactive waste. The planned framework is structured into the following categories: (1) development and systematization of investigation techniques for selecting suitable sites in geosphere stability, (2) development, application and verification of prediction models for evaluating the changes of geological environment in thermal, hydraulic, mechanical and geochemical conditions for a long period of time, and (3) development of new dating techniques for providing information about geologic history and the timing of geologic events. In this paper, the current status of R\&D activities with previous scientific and technological progress is summarized.
