This annual report provides an overview of major results and progress on research and development activities at Fusion Research and Development Directorate for FY2008 and FY2009. Concerning the ITER project, JAEA was nominated as the domestic agency by the Japanese government after the ITER Agreement took effect, and has fulfilled the obligations. In the development of superconducting conductors, JAEA immediately started and completed the construction of a plant to fabricate superconducting conductors, and started their fabrication ahead of other countries. For the Broader Approach (BA) activities, JAEA was designated as the implementing agency by the Japanese government after the BA Agreement took effect, and has fulfilled the obligations and promoted three projects in the BA activities steadily through domestic cooperation and coordination with Europe.
核融合研究開発部門における平成20年度及び平成21年度の研究開発活動の主な成果と進捗について、原子力機構内の他の研究開発部門及び原子力機構外の研究機関並びに大学との協力により実施されたものも含めて、報告する。国際熱核融合実験炉(ITER)計画については、ITER協定の発効後は、原子力機構は国より国内機関に指名され、その責務を遂行してきた。超伝導導体の開発では、世界に先駆けてトロイダル磁場コイル用超伝導導体の製作技術基盤を構築し、いち早く超伝導導体製作工場の建設に着手し、これを完成させ、世界に先駆けて超伝導導体の製作を開始した。幅広いアプローチ(BA)活動については、BA協定の発効後は、原子力機構は国より実施機関に指定され、その責務を遂行し、BA活動の3つの事業を国内連携しつつ欧州と協調して順調に進めた。また、JT-60SAの設置に向け、JT-60の運転を平成20年8月に完遂させ、その本格的解体・撤去に向けて解体準備作業を順調に進めている。また、BA活動の拠点となる六ヶ所BAサイトの整備についても計画通りに進め、原型炉R\&D棟,計算機・遠隔実験棟,IFMIF/EVEDA開発試験棟,中央変電所の建設を平成22年3月に当初予定通り竣工させた。
