我々は、「あかり」を用いて近傍銀河の近・中間・遠赤外域での撮像観測および近・中間赤外域での分光観測から系外銀河のダストの物理、化学的性質を解明してきた。今回、撮像・分光データ整約とも大幅な改善行い、特にアウトフロー等により生じた領域からの微弱な赤外線輻射の検出から、これらの領域でのダスト生成・変成・破壊の過程を初めて観測的に明らかにした。また遠赤外線のデータから直接星生成率・物質量を見積もる手段を開発し、銀河内の星生成がいくつかの異なる過程から生じていることを示唆するなどのさまざまな成果を報告する。
