Solar-CプランAでは太陽極域観測の為にイオンエンジンを適用した傾斜軌道面への投入が検討されており、大容量且つ軽量・コンパクトな電力システムがキーテクノロジーの1つとして挙げられている。
搭載太陽電池パドルには、従来パドル性能に比べ約2倍の発生電力質量比(Power Weight Ratio)>100W/kg@BOLが望まれている。
研開本部電源Gでは2006年度よりIII-V族化合物系宇宙用薄膜太陽電池を開発し、2009年度迄の研究成果として世界で初めて２接合薄膜太陽電池セルアレイシートの実用化量産開発に成功した。また薄膜太陽電池を適用した軽量パドルは2007年度より薄膜太陽電池のメリットを最大限に活かすパドル構造及び実装方法の研究試作をすすめ、2009年度迄の研究成果として、従来の軽量リジッドパドルに比べ約2倍のP.W.R.(=106W/kg@BOL,@55C)性能及び約3倍(パネル厚さ1/3)の収納性を有するフレーム支持構造薄膜軽量太陽電池パドル実現性の目途を得た。
ここでは，これらの研究・開発成果を基にSolar-CプランA適用に向けた薄膜軽量太陽電池パドルの検討状況を報告する．
