X線による観測は、ブラックホールや中性子星、超新星残骸など宇宙の高エネルギー現象を探る強力な手段である。波長が短いため、理論的限界となる角度分解能(回折限界)は口径1m程度の望遠鏡でも1marcsec以下と非常に小さい。しかし、形状精度の問題からこの角度分解能を実現するのは非常に難しく、現在最高の分解能を達成しているチャンドラ衛星でも0.5秒角の分解能となっている。
我々は、補償光学を用いて形状精度を補正し、高い角度分解能を実現することを目指している。試験として、直入射光学系の副鏡を可変形状鏡としレーザー光を参照して補償光学を行った。可視光と13.5nmのEUV光でのも最像を行った結果、いずれも2.1秒の角度分解能を達成した。可視光についてはほぼ回折限界に達しているがEUV光はまだ限界には遠いので、引き続き開発を行う。
